More drink please...

Coopers, Glasgow

It was a work night out to welcome the many new faces in the newsroom as we inch ever closer to our move to Pacific Quay.

I've now marked out my desk, which overlooks the River Clyde (pictures to follow after I've officially flitted there on May 14). I have to admit that I'm very conscious of the height and looking out the window exacerbates that slight feeling of vertigo.

I think the view and the whole environment will be distraction enough to compensate for any uneasy sensations.

I'm struggling a bit (quite a bit) today after a night out Chez Barrs in darkest Lanark. I really should know better than to drink whisky after beer and wine of all persuasions.

Add to that the fact that it was Sophie's annual dancing show in the Mitchell Hall today. I managed to sleep through some of it and to be fair, it didn't feel as long as it has done in previous years. I saw both her appearances so I don't feel such a bad dad.

The election looms large on Thursday so that'll be a long night. By this time in an election campaign, most people are just looking forward to the main event itself and this one is no different.

Running - I'm going to scale down from the relatively small amount I've been doing for the past few weeks because my left achilles tendon is really giving me some amount of jip and the right one isn't far behind either.

I'm becoming more convinced that it's the result of tight calf muscles so I'm going to see if I can get a massage this week sometime.

I'm still going to do the Edinburgh 10k on Sunday because it's a favourite of mine but I can guarantee it won't be a PB or anything like it.

A day at the races

A day at the races

Normally when it comes to horse-racing, I'd be just as well throwing my cash into the bucket but I had a wee stroke of luck yesterday.

I was a guest of HBOS at the Scottish Grand National at Ayr and managed to back the winner at 14-1 which brought in £75, thank you very much.

Being a canny Scot, I promised myself I'd pocket the cash and not fritter it away on other races so I did just that until a minute before the final race when I put £5 on number five.

The outcome? It won too! Another £22 for Sparky. All in all a very enjoyable day out with nice hospitality. I wouldn't have fancied being in the jungle of the public bar for too long through. Very many scary sights.

I watched the London Marathon on telly this morning. My own running isn't great at the moment.

In fact, I seem to be going backwards which is a bit disheartening. I did the Grangemouth 10k last Sunday and thought I was going to die. My insides felt like they were cooking and my legs were like dead weights.

I did a hard-ish training session on Tuesday night and another one of Thursday so I probably shouldn't be too surprised at feeling tired but it's not a good omen for the Edinburgh 10k coming up on May 6.

I'm still being bothered by a painful left achilles tendon and oddly now it's starting in the same place on my right heel.

Maybe I should just call it quits. Emmmm - that would be a massive NO.
